Moel Famau
At 1818ft Moel Famau is the highest peak in the chain of hills that make up the Clwydian Range. Distinctive for the Jubilee Tower at the summit, Moel Famau is also the central point within the range and a good place to start exploring.
The wide expanses of beautiful heather moorland on Moel Famau are full of wildlife. Skylarks are often seen and heard overhead catching the mountain winds and black grouse, one of WalesÂ’ rarest birds, have a stronghold here.
The short walk to the top of Moel Famau is rewarded with spectacular views across the Wirral and Merseyside to the east and across to the coast, Snowdonia and the Dee Valley to the west and south. It is also possible to see the chain of Iron Age Hillforts that follow the range, huge earth ramparts constructed around many of the peaks over 2500 years ago when the tops of these hills were occupied and defended.
The main path to the top of Moel Famau is approximately a mile and a half to the summit. It is steep in places but well surfaced. The Jubilee Tower at the top was constructed in 1810 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of King George III.

Directions
From A494 between Mold and Ruthin turn off to Tafarn y Gelyn and follow the signs for Moel Famau. There are several carparks from which you can start your walk. Possibly the easiest walk starts from the carpark by the cattle grid.
